Why I Quit Writing. Why I Relapsed. June 16, 2011

I’ve been gone for a long time, but now I’m back. It’s been so long since I used WordPress that I’m having difficulty finding the most basic settings, like, how to make this blog public again.
Where have I been? Well, I spent about 4 years writing a book. When I finished it, I left it in a dark corner on my hard-drive to rot and then quit writing for about 4 years.
I didn’t quit writing overnight, you see. You can’t really quit something that you were compelled to do for so many years without a reason.
I’ll post more about this in the future, but basically I made writing out to be such a chore mentally, that I could barely muster up the energy to write more than a two sentence email. I struggled trying to find a new project to begin, but found that I just didn’t enjoy it anymore. If fact, I hated it.
Sometimes you need some distance before you can go back to something. Over time, I only wrote when I had a strong urge. This resulted in a few pages here and there of different projects, but primarily, when I did feel the urge to write, I wrote something called Wall. Wall turned into my fun writing. It has a very vague story and I allowed myself to break any rules that I wanted while writing it. I decided early on that the book is unpublishable so I could just enjoy writing it.
Being a creative person, when I stopped writing seriously I went back to an old hobby that I abandoned years ago when I started to get interested in writing – playing guitar. So, for the past 3-4 years I’ve dedicated myself to relearning the instrument. I’m happy to say that I’m much better now than ever, and I still enjoy it very much. I’ve also gained an interest in guitar repair and refurbishment.
A few months months ago, I started to feel the itch to write again. I did some free writing here and there and settled on writing a science fiction comedy. I started writing and realized that it was probably the darkest and most depressing thing that I had ever written.
While trying to figure out if I should continue to write this “comedy”, I was hit over the head with a wonderful new idea. I’ve been working on that idea for about 3 months now and I have about 33 pages done.
One thing that I will talk about in later posts is what went wrong with my novel. Having a few years to mull it over, I am aware of several mistakes that I made and I have learned from them. I’ll share them with you and we can have a laugh.
……
Checked all of my old blog links today. Many of you are gone. Many of you are still here. It’s great to see some of my favorites are still around!
